Matthew Sanford Waking Gratitude

Dear Matthew,

You have inspired my weekly Random Note of Gratitude! Often when inspired by an individual, I will actually send my note to another person with the same name, but this time I wanted to go direct to the source. That being said, as much as this is a love letter for you, it is also a love letter for Matthew Sanfords everywhere and for all human beings really.

By complete, utter “random google chance” I have stumbled upon your work – or rather, my mom did and shared it with me. Your grueling, bittersweet, and profoundly life affirming journey and the quiet simplicity and beauty with which your words express that has touched me deeply and captured my imagination. In a world where perfect bodies doing perfect yoga poses are but an instagram feed away, your book “Waking” has triggered me to remember why I loved yoga the first time I got on my mat and why I continue to practice today. Exhilarating though the striking of poses may be, for me it is the creating of space to embrace and breathe into the silence, dark though I fear it may be, that is the truly sweet and transformative work. It’s at this intersection that I am able to connect my mind with my body, if only for a fleeting moment, and sip the sweet nectar of presence in being.

From the bottom of my singing heart, I thank you Matthew for bravely being who you are, for courageously having the experiences you have had, and for transforming them into your magnum opus. The world breathes easier because of you.

With love and gratitude,
Jana

Plastic Saddle Nat Stuckey Gratitude

Dear Nathan,

I just got turned on to a groovy, old country tune by Nat Stuckey called, “Plastic Saddle.” As good of a personal theme song as I’ve ever laid ears on, I’ve been inspired to send my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to you, another man that shares his name. I hope you have a theme song of your own Nathan, a little number that lights you up, quickens your step, and allows you to channel the complete amazingness that is you. For being in this world and doing your thing as only you can, I’m sending you my most heartfelt, “leather saddle” kind of gratitude. Anything less just wouldn’t do!

All the best,

Dear Aubrey

After randomly selecting your name, I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude to say Happy Spring and more importantly, thanks for being you! Moore Gratitude for Kelli

I've had the pleasure of teaching yoga to a new client named Kelli Moore the past month or so.  She has inspired this Random Note of Gratitude, which is kind of fun because there are a lot of Kelli Moores in the world. Thanks to each and every one of you for being you!

Dear Kelli,

For no other reason than you share the same name as a woman I have recently become acquainted with, I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude. The Kelli I know has had a rough go of it the past couple years but she has weathered the storm with fortitude and grace and every time we meet she always has a beautiful smile on her face. So! For the tough times you’ve been through, as well as the happy ones, and for wearing a beautiful smile of your own, I would like to say thank you! There may be a lot of Kelli Moores in the world but there is only one you and you are amazing! Sending you all the best!

Shine On Sweet Lena

A Random Note of Gratitude inspired by my brother's beautiful partner Lena!  Happy 30th girl!!!

Dear Lena,

Inspired by my brother’s girlfriend Lena, I have chosen you, another Lena, as the recipient of this Random Note of Gratitude. It’s hard to believe that Lena is turning 30 on Saturday, for I have met very few women as wise, passionate, and brave at such a young age. I don’t know you, but I’m quite certain that you have your own brand of fire and creativity, a way of being in this world and connecting with others that is entirely your own. And it is for being you, plain and simple, that I would like to say thanks. You are a beautiful, amazing woman and your presence on this planet makes a difference. Shine on sweet Lena!

With love and gratitude,

Spring Will Come

With the passing of February and the arrival of March, I can't help but feel like spring is literally underfoot. Just as the earth seems to be percolating with possibility, so too does my heart as once again the quiet introspection of winter begins to give way to spring.

Hal Borland quote about spring image

Love Is The Flower

Perhaps it's February and the Hallmark holiday herein...perhaps it's the fact that despite a huge Colorado snowstorm this past weekend it feels like spring is about to burst onto the scene.  Maybe because another birthday is right around the corner for me, I'm extra reflective about the state of my life right now.  Whatever the reason, this quote from John Lennon has been percolating in my heart the past few weeks and making me smile.  It's true that the act of living is never short on challenges, but it's equally true that despite the trials and triumphs life inevitably brings, there are daily moments of love and joy to be experienced.  I'm feeling incredibly grateful for all the beautiful, unique, and wild wildflowers in my life.

Dear Barbara,

Unable to come up with a name today for my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a person I don’t know, I decided to use fakenamegenerator.com. Though apparently a fake name, it turns out that there a lot of very real Barbara Johnsons in the world! I have settled on you to be the recipient of this physical note, but this is really a thank you/love letter for all of you. Without further ado, for being who are, for showing up in your life, for loving, dreaming, hurting and growing, you have my heartfelt thanks! In ways both big and small you make a difference Barbara – lots of gratitude for being who you are!

Love For Emily Bradfords Everywhere

Dear Emily,

I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude because you have the same name as another young woman I know who just lost her father. I have thought about her and all the things that I would like to tell her a lot lately. It seems particularly hard to find the right words in the midst of tragedy, but it has occurred to me that that which I would tell her is not that different from the words I express to individuals I don’t know in these weekly notes. So this is a love note for both of you and for all of the Emily Bradfords in the world. Amidst and even because of all of the tragedies that befall you and the hard lessons that come your way in this life, you are a beautiful woman. It’s easy to enjoy that on the sunny days, but try not to forget it during the stormier times too. You possess inner strength that can get you through anything and your existence on this planet is meaningful. Thank you for being you Emily…no one else could do it better!

With lots of love for a happy new year,

End of Life Counselor Gratitude

It seems my last couple Random Notes of Gratitude have been a little less random and a lot more directed.  No matter, it still feels really good to send gratitude out.  This note is making its way to a woman named Marianne who I have had the pleasure of meeting this past month.  As much as it is a specific thank you for her, it is a general and random thank you for all of the incredible men and women who do the jobs that are so important in our society, but so often overlooked. To social workers, medical professionals, teachers, etc., everywhere, you make a difference and you have my heartfelt gratitude.

Dear Marianne,

I usually reserve my weekly Random Notes of Gratitude for individuals that I don’t know but I would be remiss if I didn’t send some gratitude your way. Though I don’t know you well, I have been most impressed with your kindness and compassion and especially the grace with which you have helped my grandma (and my family) begin to navigate some important and overwhelming decisions regarding how she wants the rest of her life to look. I often think we give our praise and adoration to all the wrong people – movie stars, athletes, and politicians. They aren’t entirely without their virtues, but there are so many individuals doing such important work that never receive the recognition they deserve. You are one of those individuals Marianne! So, for showing up and being you each and every day and for truly making an important difference in the lives of individuals whose lives are so uncertain, I send you my heartfelt thanks. Wishing you all the best in 2015!

Warmest regards,
Jana

Old Friend Gratitude

Confession...

It has been a month since I have sent a Random Note of Gratitude. To be completely honest, it's not the first time it has happened in my almost three years of working on this project. After missing a week or two in the past however, I always felt compelled to make my notes up and back date them. But this time around, I just want to come clean with it.! I'm pleased to report that the world didn't end because four Random Notes of Gratitude didn't go out in the world. Instead, planet Earth kept spinning around the sun and I honored the fact that I needed a break. It has been a challenging month and it's a hectic time of year - the perfect time to conjure up some gratitude if ever there was one - but I didn't feel like it.

Instead, I have been thinking a lot about what I want Random Notes of Gratitude to look like moving forward. I'm not sure what that is yet, I just needed the space to ruminate. Ultimately, I guess it doesn't have to look like anything, In addition to tickling my quirky fancy, the simple act of sending out notes to strangers engages my creativity, my heart, and my humanity.  I would like to think that my notes make a difference and brighten someone else's day and that sharing them inspires others to spread Random Gratitude in their lives, but honestly, writing them brightens my day and inspires me to live my best life, and that to me, is the most important reason to send them.

Admittedly, an unusual intro for me...there may be more to come in the future! For now I would like to share the Random Note of Gratitude that I wrote today. It is being sent to a woman in Lakewood, California that is a stranger to me, but who knew my grandparents once upon a time. I have been spending a lot of time with my grandma the past several months and she has mentioned Dorie and Chuck with great fondness on numerous occasions. When Dorie's Christmas Card came in the mail, just as it has every year for probably three decades, I knew it was time to put pen to paper once again.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me in this little adventure.  May you have a wonderful holiday season however it is you celebrate. We really do have a lot to be grateful for - collectively and individually - and I hope we will all be brave enough  to share our light  with others.

Random Note of Gratitude #139 to Dorie in California

Thank you note example image image of handwritten random note of gratitude to Dorie in California

Dear Dorie,

I have been sending out these Random Notes of Gratitude for close to three years now. Typically, I send them to someone I don’t know, thanking them for being who they are. Perhaps I am naïve or idealistic, but despite all the ugliness in the world, I truly believe that we are all more alike than we are different, that our time here is important, and that we all have the ability to create a beautiful, rich story. I don’t know you personally Dorie, but my grandma Carita Eggers does. I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with her the past several months and she has often spoken fondly of you, Chuck, and your family. If nothing else, the fact that you have sent a yearly Christmas card for the past several decades is worthy of some Random Gratitude. But the motivation behind the act itself is what touches me deeply and speaks volumes about the kind of person you are. Thank you for being a wonderful friend and support to my grandma and late grandpa and for staying in touch all these years. And thanks also for being an incredible wife, mom, daughter, and friend to all those that you know…thank you for making your own beautiful story Dorie. I might not know you, but you have done your part to make this world a better place and for that you have my gratitude. I was so sorry to hear that your husband passed this year, but have no doubt you have an amazing family and support system. You will be in my thoughts this holiday season and I truly wish you all the best and lots of love.

With gratitude,
Jana

Rebekah DiMartino Love Letter

Rebekah Gregory DiMartino Inspired Random Note of Gratitude

Pretty much all of us have heard about the incredible journey of Rebekah Gregory DiMartino, who survived the Boston Marathon Bombing 18 months ago.  Just this past week, she decided to amputate her left leg after numerous surgeries.  A girl after my own heart, she wrote a break up letter to her leg via her FB page.  You can read it here and a little more about her journey here. You have inspired a Random Note of Gratitude to another woman who shares your name Rebekah! You are an absolute light and I wish you all the best!

Dear Rebekah,

You share the same name as another incredible woman who has been in the news of late – a young lady who decided to amputate her leg 18 months after surviving the Boston Marathon bombing. Her sense of humor and passion for life in the face of such tremendous adversity is nothing short of amazing and she is the inspiration for this Random Note of Gratitude. I don’t know you Rebekah, but I feel quite certain you are amazing in your own right and have a story all your own. For being who you are and showing up in your life every day, you have my gratitude!

Tom Magliozzi Inspired Gratitude

Dear Tom,

I have been a fan of the NPR radio show Car Talk for lots of years. I don’t always tune in, but when I do, the brothers who host it – Tom and Ray Magliozzi – always have me in stitches. I couldn’t care less about the mechanics of cars. I simply enjoy listening to their banter and philosophy on life. Sadly, Tom passed away this week, which is why I am sending this Random Note of Gratitude to you, another Tom. Your own expertise may not be in cars, but I’m sure you possess it in some area. More importantly, you are the one and only you, with a personality that can’t be matched. For that I would like to thank you. You make a difference in this world. Tom!

Let's Hear it For the Boys

After a year plus of gratitude for women, it was time to send some gratitude to the guys! RNG #57 was inspired by one of my favorites of all time, my grandpa Harold Eggers.

Dear Harold,

For over a year I have been sending a weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a woman that I don’t know. Having finally hit all the states – some of them twice even! – I have been asking myself the question, what next? It occurred to me that the men of the world might enjoy some random appreciation, gratitude, and love as well. So inspired by a man that I loved dearly - a stand up guy if ever there was one – I sought out another man named Harold E. like my late grandfather, to send this Random Note of Gratitude to. I don’t know you of course, but for all of the ways you have been a stand up guy, for those you have supported, encouraged, and loved, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. For someone somewhere Harold, you have definitely made a difference!

From One Jana to Another

Long overdue but a very significant RNG! This went to Jana in Hawaii back in April 2013

Dear Jana,

Over a year ago, inspired by a quirky little idea that popped into my quirky little brain, I started sending a weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a woman I don’t know. I wanted to put something heartfelt, sweet, and unexpected out into the world, just because. I committed to a year of notes and figured I would hit all the states. There have been a few repeats, but this note is significant in that it completes that cycle, though I plan to continue this process as it brings me a lot of perspective and joy. And though we are strangers, this note is extra special in that I have chosen you because we share a name! I suppose you have some delicious quirks of your own, so from one Jana to another, I send this Random Note of Gratitude, thanking you for those! For being on this planet, for sharing who you are as only you can, for loving, laughing, crying and everything in between you have my heartfelt gratitude! May you sparkle and shine as only a Jana like you can!

Dear Jack,

As you probably know, there are a lot of Jack Johnsons in this world - some better known than others - but all important in their own right. In a way, I suppose this Random Note of Gratitude is for all of them, but it is landing in your hands specifically. For what it’s worth coming from a woman you don’t know, I would like to say thanks for being you Jack and having your experience here on planet Earth. I can only guess at what it all means, but I do think it is very meaningful. So for fighting the good fight and showing up every day, you have my gratitude Jack.

Love for Alyssa

Late but not forgotten...RNG #55 to Alyssa sent in April 2013

Dear Alyssa,

I am writing to you, a complete stranger, to say thank you for fighting the good fight – thank you for being in this world. I began these weekly Random Notes of Gratitude a little over a year ago in an attempt to put something light-hearted and heartfelt out into the world – a world in which I feel it is becoming increasingly more challenging to feel connected. There are so many things that we are supposed to be doing, so many ways that we are trying to measure up, that we sometimes forget the importance of actively engaging in our lives – enjoying time with a loved one, taking in a sunset, or simply stopping for a moment to be with ourselves to acknowledge our innate beauty, creativity, and courage. So Alyssa, for the bravery and humanity of your own journey and for all the ways you connect, create, and appreciate in your life, I send you my love and gratitude.

Happy Spring,

Double D's Sized Gratitude

Better late than never...it seems a handful of Random Notes of Gratitude didn't get posted to the site so I am getting them up now! Here's RNG #54 that went to Rhode Island in March 2013. It was inspired by one of my dearest friends in the world, sweet Double D's.

Dear Danielle,

This is a Random Note of Gratitude from a woman you don’t know, simply to thank you for being in this world. I don’t know a thing about you, but I happen to know another Danielle. She is beyond lovely and is one of the kindest, most sensitive, most accepting and loving individuals I know. I’m grateful she’s in my life, just as I’m sure there are several people in your circle of family and friends who feel happier and lighter because they know you. May the vibrancy of spring fill you with joy and inspire you to keep doing your thing and being lovely you, Danielle!

Teach Your Children Well Tamara

This Random Note of Gratitude was inspired by an amazing teacher in Montana named Tamara.

Share it with an A+ teacher you know!

Dear Tamara,

You are receiving this Random Note of Gratitude, thanking you for being who you are, because you share the name of another woman I know. In addition to be a vibrant and amazing human, she is one of the best teachers in the world, a profession that is of the utmost importance, but quite often rather thankless and riddled with obstacles from all sides. Despite all of that Tamara and so many other incredible men and women, show up daily, fight the good fight, and positively affect the lives of our children. I don’t know what you do Tamara, but I do know that each of us has the opportunity in this life to both teach and to learn. It’s a huge part of what being human is all about – and also often overlooked and thankless. The dynamic of give and take, of showing up in relationship with each other is so worthy though, and I would like to send gratitude to you for your part in this process. It may seem insignificant but it does make a difference. So for teaching and learning, for loving and growing, thanks for being you Tamara! Happy October!

Live Your Days Inspired Anew

Dear Lydia,

I recently saw the story of a remarkable young woman on Dateline NBC which is why I am sending this, my weekly Random Note of Gratitude, to you, another Lydia in another place. Dateline Lydia nearly had her life taken from her in the most brutal way, yet against all odds managed to hold on and thrive though her battle has been long and arduous. Most amazing to me, she found it in her heart to forgive the man who so violently assaulted her. She came up with an acronym for her name and yours! Live Your Days Inspired Anew. I may not know you Lydia – how you struggle, shine, love, and dream – but I do know that you are quite remarkable in your own right. Thanks for being amazing you Lydia and for showing up for your life every single day. May you live all your days inspired anew.

Valerie Harper Inspired Gratitude

Better late than never...it seems a handful of Random Notes of Gratitude didn't get posted to the site so I am getting them up now! Here's RNG #53 that went out in March 2013.

Happy Spring Valerie in Indiana!

Many years ago, when I had just moved to LA, I met Valerie Harper and her dear friend Sue while waiting tables at a California Pizza Kitchen. I remember thinking, “What would I say to her or ask her if I was brave enough to do so?” I guess I didn’t have to be, for unprompted they said, “We are dying to know where are you from? We think you grew up on a ranch with a big family in Idaho!” That wasn’t exactly the case but it started a conversation that I will never forget and am grateful I had. That those two women took the time to engage with me in that fashion made an indelible impression. How we treat others, how we connect with them, says so much about who we are. They were classy, kind, and real. In light of Ms. Harper’s courageous announcement that she has terminal cancer, these two women have been on my mind and my heart goes out to both of them – I’m sure that their friendship and love for each will be an enormous comfort during this incredibly painful and challenging time. Inspired by Valerie and Sue, I send this Random Note of Gratitude to you Valerie, thanking you for the class act you have been and for the ways you show up for your family and friends. Perhaps you have even made the day of some stranger you came across along the way, simply for seeing and acknowledging her. For all of this and for being who you are, you have my gratitude. May your heart bloom with happiness like springtime all around you!

Love,
Jana

Yes Indeedy Dandy Henry

Dear Henry,

This, my weekly Random Note of Gratitude, is perhaps a little bit more unusual than usual this time around. I always send these notes to a stranger, sometimes inspired by someone I know, sometimes inspired by someone I don’t know, sometimes inspired by the sheer madness of my beloved brain and the random names it comes up with. Though you are indeed a stranger to me, you feel like a bit more… You see, this particular note can be attributed to the genius of Google, which put you on my radar when I did some convoluted search on narcissism about a year and a half ago. I devoured your blog, therapyisdandy.com, and check it often for new posts. Know that your knowledge and perspective offered comfort and insight to me at a time I desperately needed them. You have such a way with words Henry - your sense of humor, caring, and humanity truly shine through. No doubt, your blog like your practice is a labor of love and sustained effort. Your effort is appreciated and it does make a difference. You are dandy indeed Henry and for that you have my random gratitude!

Lou Gehrig Ice Bucket Gratitude

Dear Lou,

Unless you live under a rock, it’s kind of hard to miss the ice bucket challenge that’s making the rounds these days, raising awareness and research money for ALS. I guess you might say that this Random Note of Gratitude was inspired by all of that, particularly the brave man and beloved athlete who’s own diagnosis put it on the map in the first place, Lou Gehrig. Weeks after Lou’s diagnosis went public he delivered what has been called baseball’s Gettysburg Address, at one point commenting, “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Sydney Bristow Gratitude Alias

Dear Sydney,

Sometimes the inspiration for my Random Notes of Gratitude is a bit unusual. I have chosen you for no other reason than you share the name of one of my favorite television characters, Sydney Bristow from Alias. True, she’s the stuff of make believe, but there is no denying she kicked ass and took care of business. I’m guessing your life looks quite different than that of an undercover CIA agent, but I have no doubt that you get things done in your own right. Hollywood plotlines are exciting, but they actually don’t compare to the day in and day out grit it takes to live a life well. For showing up each and every day in your life and for being a hero to those that love you most, I send you my gratitude!

All the best,
Jana

Kim Then and Now

This Random Note of Gratitude was featured in the arts section of  The Maine Daily on August 31, 2014.  Check it out here!

Dear Kim,

Perhaps you are wondering how this Random Note of Gratitude has randomly arrived in your hands? A few days ago I ran a half marathon with my mom, which made her reflect on the many races she has run over the years, particularly her first Bolder Boulder with her best friend, a woman that shares the same name as you. Reminiscing got me thinking about Kim too. She was such a warm and wonderful lady – an amazing mom, wife and friend, who tragically passed way before her time. Thinking about her has inspired me to honor her memory in some small way, so with love for the beautiful being that Kim was, I send you this Random Note of Gratitude for the beautiful being that you are. Thank you for being you Kim – for laughing, loving, and living your life to the fullest!

Warmest regards,
Jana

Catherine A Star in the City of Angels

Dear Catherine,

Though we don’t know each other, I have it on good word that you are an amazing woman…selfless to a fault, generous with your time and resources, and always willing to lend a hand to those in your life that may be in need. You have been a friend, support and even a mentor and though these actions might not seem like much to you, they speak volumes about the kind of person you are. It is for all of this that I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude. Thank you Catherine for being the kind of woman that shows up. You can’t even begin to appreciate the positive impact this has had on those whose lives you have touched. By being you, you have indeed made this world a brighter, better place to be.

Lois Lane and Superman

Dear Lois,

Lois Lane may have told Clark Kent, “Sometimes I worry there is no poetry in you,” but when it comes to YOU Lois, I make no such assertions, quite the contrary in fact. Just like there was a lot more to Clark than met the eye, I am quite certain the same can be said of you.  There is poetry deep inside your soul, unique to only you. I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude to thank you for that and for the ways you share it with the world both big and small. It does make a difference and is an act of courage and heroism. Keep fighting the good fight Lois - superman has nothing on you!

Every Inch of You Is Perfect Meghan

Dear Meghan,

A lot of times I feel like I live under a rock, but even I have been caught up in the viral frenzy that is singer songwriter Meghan Trainor’s new song “I’m All About the Bass.” I have even indulged in watching an interview or two with her and I just love her. I can’t help but wonder, is it that she has an 'h' in her name?!! Inspired by this young talent and the refreshing message in her catchy little ditty, I have found you - another Meghan with an 'h' - to send this Random Note of Gratitude to. Thank you Meghan for being who you are and doing what you do as only you can. It does make a difference on this little planet of ours and in the words of Ms. Trainor, “every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top!”

Dear Rusty,

I came across another Rusty a couple of days ago at the Home Depot. My mom and I had made four trips there in the pursuit of fixing two leaky faucets on our own. With Rusty in mind, I am sending this Random Note of Gratitude to you. I don’t know what you do, but I’d like to think that you are the kind of guy that has also been of service to others in some small way during your life and I’d like to thank you for doing so. Inspiration Image

I am often asked how I choose the individuals to whom I send my Random Notes of Gratitude. While there certainly isn't a science to it, I suppose there is a method to my madness.  Sometimes I am touched by a person in my own life and as a way of recognizing him/her I will head on over to www.whitepages.com and see if there is another individual with the same name.  In these instances, it feels like a double whammy of gratitude...I'm not only acknowledging a stranger, but also someone I know.  Sometimes I will ask a friend to choose a name, and sometimes it truly is a Random Note of Gratitude. When it gets right down to it though, I would like to think that these notes are universal and could be sent to almost anyone. For me, writing them is almost like a meditation.  They have helped me to slow down and be observant as I go about my activivites during the week.  They have helped me to have more compassion for others and even for myself. They have allowed me to tap into the goodness that I truly believe exists in the world and in each and every one of us.

My mom is a flight attendant with Skywest Airlines and I have the very good fortune of being on her travel benefits which means I can fly standby for free to many destinations. More often than not this arrangement works incredibly well, but every now and again I find myself stuck at a station, unable to get on a flight.  I had one such day this past week when I found myself  at Portland International Airport just shy of twenty four hours. Getting out of Portland was looking rather grimm for the next couple days and I was in the process of trying to figure out alternate routes to get back to Denver, not an easy task when one is incredibly tired and frustrated. I was waiting for yet another flight, this one very early in the morning and was next in line on the standby list when the gate agents announced that they flight had checked in full. Ready to cry I remained at the gate, too exhausted to move, when I heard the gate agents paging two passengers.  One passenger showed up, but the other one, whose name was Michelle didn't, and I got her seat moments before the plane pushed back.  When I texted my mom that I barely got on the flight because a woman named Michelle hadn't shown up, she texted back it looks lik you have your next Random Note of Gratitude!

This is a Random Note of Gratitude to say thank you for being you. I have no idea who you are or where your travels may take you. The truth is that we may not share all that much in common. Dear Judy,

Inspired by my mom’s best friend of more than thirty years, another Judy E like yourself, I am sending out my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a stranger to you. She has worked hard and struggled in her own life, but she always takes care of herself and looks great, she always has a smile on her face and she has a great sense of humor. I don’t know what qualities you possess that set you apart and make you memorable, but I know you possess them, and for that I am sending my gratitude! I hope this little note brings a smile to your face and reminds you that you are loved. Thanks for being the one and only you Judy.

Got Gratitude Grandma Inspired

Dear Carita,

You hold in your hands my 116th Random Note of Gratitude, a weekly note that I send to express my thanks to a person I don’t know. It may seem a little bit odd, but I like to think that when it gets right down to it, there is a lot more that we have in common as human beings than we do that is different. My own grandma is also named Carita and over the past couple of months I have had the opportunity to spend a lot more time with her than I have in the past. In talking with her and hearing her story, I have a much greater appreciation for the life she has lived and it has really made me reflect on how I want to live my own life. I have no doubt, that if we were to sit down and chat that I would experience much the same. So Carita, for being who you are, for the dreams you have realized and even those you haven’t, for sharing your heart and soul in this world – a task that is far from easy – I would like to send you my love and gratitude. May you smile often!

Overdue Gratitude Denny Phillips

Dear Denny,

About twenty years ago or so, while on a bike ride in Vail with my family, I somehow managed to get separated from them and lost. A few years before cell phones were all the rage, I was an absolutely terrified teenager, convinced I would never see my loved ones again. I have no idea if it was you, but a stranger named Denny Phillips very kindly helped me to locate them. I don’t remember all the details, but I have never forgotten the name and the help I received. If it was you Denny, a long overdue thank you in this my weekly Random Note of Gratitude. And if it wasn’t you, I would like to extend my gratitude to you all the same, as I have no doubt there have been numerous times you too have helped and been there for your family, friends, and even strangers.

Make the Most of Yourself in New Hampshire

Dear Arthur,

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Make the most of yourself…for that is all there is of you.” It is with this thought in mind that I send you this Random Note of Gratitude, a weekly gesture I make to a stranger, to say thanks for being who you are. In a culture where we are bombarded with images of all it is that we are supposed to be, it’s sometimes hard to remember, appreciate, and love who it is that we actually are and to know that that is enough. So for what it’s worth Arthur, a woman you don’t know is sending gratitude from Colorado, thanking you for making the most of yourself and putting your best self out in the world. It isn’t always easy, but it is worth it. Thank you!

Be Yourself Luc in Maine

Dear Luc,

Oscar Wilde brilliantly said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Easier said than done sometimes, particularly when we live in a world where it is all too easy to compare ourselves to others and feel as though we aren’t measuring up. I guess that’s part of the reason I started sending out weekly Random Notes of Gratitude to strangers. It helps me feel like my best self and reminds me that there are billions of unique stories happening in this world – every person matters. So for being yourself Luc, as only you can, particularly on those days that it feels most challenging, I would like to say thank you! Dear Lucky,

I have always had a thing for double and triple numbers. Call me superstitious, but I think it’s kind of lucky. Being that this the 111th weekly Random Note of Gratitude that I have sent out, it just felt right to send it to a man called Lucky. I certainly hope your name has served you well, but when it gets right down to it, our names are such a small part of who we are and have very little to do with how we choose to show up in our lives each and every day. It is for all the ways you show up, express who you are and contribute to your community and family - whatever that may look like - that I would like to say thank you. Whatever your beliefs and background Lucky, that you are you and on this planet is a very lucky thing indeed!

Uncle Donald Inspired Gratitude

Dear Donald,

Though I am a stranger to you, I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude to say thank you for being in this world and doing the things that you do to make it a better place. This particular note is inspired by my own uncle Don Bradford. I had the chance to spend time with him and his family this past Easter Sunday and I couldn’t help but admire what a fantastic dad he is. He had spent the weekend at baseball games with his son and will be running a three mile race with his daughter in the weekend to come. These acts of kindness may not seem like that big of a deal in the short term, but in the long term they really add up and make an impact on their lives that is nothing short of tremendous. I don’t know a thing about you, but I have no doubt that there is some aspect in your life in which you really shine and make a difference to those around you. Thank you for that Donald!

Gratitude For Jesus Hernandez' Perspective

Dear Jesus,

The world is a much smaller place than it used to be. As a matter of fact, this Random Note of Gratitude is inspired by a man that I have never even met, but with whom you share a name. I don’t even know how it is that I came across his photo feed on instagram, but I did, and have since enjoyed the world as viewed through his unique perspective. Though I might argue that it often causes a great disconnect, were it not for social media, Jesus would never have been on my radar, and you wouldn’t be holding my weekly Random Note of Gratitude in your hands.

Abraham Lincoln Birthday Gratitude

Dear Abe,

Being that today is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, one of this country’s greatest men, it somehow seems appropriate to send my 100th weekly Random Note of Gratitude to another man who shares his name. You aren’t president, and you may or may not have aspirations of being so, but you are a unique individual having an experience and creating a life for yourself. Your personal story might not impact thousands but it does make an impact. So, for being you as only you can be Abe, I would like to say thank you!

With love and gratitude,

Philip Seymour Hoffman Inspired Gratitude

Dear Phillip,

We lost a great actor and talent this past week. In recognition of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s lightness and darkness, his creativity and suffering - for the gift of his humanity - I am sending this Random Note of Gratitude to you, another Phillip Seymour. Your story, though undoubtedly quite different, is no less important than his, and a gift worthy of recognition. For living your life and being you as only you can, I would like to say thank you Phillip.

Dear Joseph,

Another well known and much loved Joseph Campbell said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are." It is with that beautiful thought and its author in mind that I have found you, another JC to send this Random Note of Gratitude to. Not unlike every other human being on this planet you have a story. Though its themes may not be entirely original, it is made unique by the simple truth that it is YOUR personal story and mythology Joseph. Movie Awards Season Unsung Heroes Get Gratitude

With the Hollywood Movie Awards Machine season officially upon us, A Random Note of Gratitude to all the unsung heroes and worker bees, without whose efforts the Streeps and DiCaprios, the Jonzes and Russels, the HBOs and NBCs, the Weinstein Companies and the Annupurna Pictures, would be completely, and utterly Oscar-less.

Image of end of movie credits

Dear Everyone Listed in the Credits at the End of Any Movie/TV Production Ever Made and Those in the Studio/Production Offices Working Just As Hard Without a Credit to Show for It,

The big name stars, directors, writers, producers, production companies, networks, and executives may be soaking up the limelight the next couple of months, and perhaps deservedly so at that, but that doesn’t make your unsung contributions and efforts any less important or real. In fact, without all of you doing the mundane, technical, financial,  promotional, preparatory, unglamorous, rigorous, etc. tasks – now and in decades past - Hollywood wouldn’t even exist and a Golden Globe would be nothing more than a designer paperweight.

It’s to all of you nameless laborers, saints, and much lesser known creatives that I send this Random Note of Gratitude, thanking you for your efforts and recognizing your immense contribution to an industry whose productions have in addition to sometimes causing reflection and a perspective shift in me, have also brought pure, unadulterated escapism and joy! That creative magic simply wouldn’t have been possible without you, to say nothing of the small economies that have also been built upon your backs!

I have often thought that there are two types of people in this world…those who leave the theater once the credits have begun to roll and those that happily and reverentially stay all the way until the end as a way of paying tribute to the hundreds and sometimes thousands of individuals that just made one’s entertainment possible. I am proud to count myself in the latter group and I commend you for your efforts!

With gratitude,
Jana

Dear Sean,

You are the recipient of this Random Note of Gratitude – a simple expression of thanks and love from one stranger to another. It’s quite likely that we share very little in common other than the fact that we are both human. From our first inhale until our last exhale we fill our lives with all kinds of moments. They are heart wrenching and tender, challenging and joyful. Some of these moments can break our hearts and some of them can break us open. For being human, for inhaling and exhaling and for all your moments in between Sean, thank you for being you.

Mad About You Manduka Mat

The haiku that launched a thousand sun salutes and a love for the ages with my Manduka Mat!

Manduka Modified

Dear Manduka Mat,

I have been practicing yoga for over a decade now and to be perfectly honest, I was largely resistant to you for nine of those years. Maybe it was the jarring thunk you would make as you hit the floor when unfurled by certain yogis. I definitely deemed you to be a type of weight training others endured when making their ways from their cars to the studio. Mostly though, I’m kind of hard headed about anything I perceive to be trendy - it’s a miracle I even started yoga come to think of it!

Unfortunately, in ten years time, I have gone through just as many mats if not more. There’s something about my ellemenno asana (what I like to call the whole plank-to-chaturanga-to-updog-to-downdog move that is always getting elided into one, but is actually four distinct poses!) that absolutely shreds them and quickly at that. You know you have problems when only three months into your latest mat excursion Vinnie Marino says to you, “Sweetie, what’s the deal with your mat? Is it like your favorite old jeans you can’t get rid of?”

Have I mentioned my aversion to trying trendy/new/different things?!! Enter YogaWorks-Teacher- Training-Write-A-Yoga-Haiku-Win-A-Manduka-Mat-Contest. That I would win was a no brainer, as my passion for both yoga and writing had been met with my desperation for a new mat and my determination not to spend any more money getting one! Oh, I gave hating you the old college try for the first two weeks or so, after which I turned that hatred on myself. It turns out I had become rather attached to the damage my ellemenno asana could inflict upon a mat, but you just met me pose for pose.

And here we are, over a year down the road. You keep showing up for me Manduka Mat, and in doing so you have COMPLETELY won my heart. I guess I had resigned myself to the fact that mats would come and go, but I have to say I take great comfort in knowing we’ll be together for years to come. You are better than my favorite old jeans and you don’t have holes to prove it! For being so quality and for changing my mind just by being you Manduka Mat, I send you this Random Note of Gratitude with my heartfelt thanks!

Love,
Jana

Dear Hayati,

This, my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a stranger I don’t know, contains at least two firsts. It’s the first one I am sending out in 2014 and it’s also the first Random Note of Gratitude to travel internationally! So Hayati, allow me to thank you for being you! It’s not always easy to show up in one’s life, but it is worth it. And though my world and experience of living is quite likely vastly different than yours, I like to think that we have more in common than not. Actually, I like to think that about all of the billions of beings that are alive today. We each inhale and exhale, our hearts pump blood through our bodies, and we have all felt tremendous joy and intense anguish. Each in our own way, we all share these things…different but the same. Quite simply for getting up every single day and sharing the unique expression of you, Hayati – perhaps the greatest gift of love any of us can give - you have my deepest gratitude! May you and yours be blessed in the New Year!

The Life in Your Years Abraham Lincoln

Dear Mr. Lincoln,

You probably wouldn't recognize the world we live in today, but you'll be happy to know your wise words and steadfast way of being still inspire. No doubt it is the time of year - we are about 36 hours out from 2014 here in Califonia - but these words you spoke are particularly resonant.

Abraham Lincoln Quote Modified

"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

This sentiment really makes me think and if I'm honest, I have spent a lot of time passing time, collecting years but often missing the experience of the people, places, and things that have been right there in front of me. I don't think that's something that just happens. I think it's a choice.

As I move into this New Year and all the new years to come, regardless of how many there may be, I want to practice being the kind of woman now, that on her death bed then won't even think to count the years. Instead, may I celebrate a life of love and loss, of joy and pain…may I celebrate richly textured relationships and places…may I celebrate a life fully lived and experienced.

Dear Mr. Lincoln, for your kind words of wisdom, I offer you this Random Note of Gratitude with my commitment to put a great deal more life in my years.

With Love,
Jana

A Dollar Tip Jar

Nothing says, "Happy Birthday, I love you!" like a nature made gift.

I'm fortunate to live near the beach in Santa Monica where I love to go on barefoot walks and runs and search for treasures.  I've been collecting sand dollars for the past few months and sent a jar of them off to my mom in Colorado for her Birthday earlier this month.  Where ever you may live, there's something beautiful and meaningful to be found.  What treasures are in your own backyard?

I love Wednesdays! Often deriving inspiration from those who have made an impact/difference/impression in my own life I go to www.whitepages.com and find another individual that shares their name and send out a weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a stranger! It’s like a double whammy of thankfulness! The Ed Galvez I know is an outstanding teacher and comedian and has stuck to his path with tenacity and fortitude (and humor!) that is nothing short of admirable. That warrants recognition in my book. And though I don’t know a thing about you, I am certain there is at least one quality you possess that sets you apart from all the rest. So for that and for being on this planet, for showing up for your life, and for simply being you, I would like to say thank you Edmund! May your holiday season be extra twinkly and bright!

Flying Saucer

Dear Flying Saucers,

This Random Note of Gratitude is long overdue, but I would be remiss if I didn’t write it. For just a moment on this Thursday afternoon, I felt as though I was back amidst your charming exposed brick walls, though admittedly, I’m composing this note from another coffeehouse. Since you closed your doors almost a year ago, I have been forced to date around. There are one or two potential candidates, but none of them have stirred in me that same love at first sight feeling I experienced that chilly October afternoon I chanced upon your door. It’s hard to say what I loved most about you...your location, quaintness, coffee, food, art, patrons, aliens, staff…God I loved your staff! It was the sum of all these parts that gave you an overall vibe that was to me quite irresistible. So thank you! Thank you for being the place I could regularly go to when I needed to feel connected and creative.  Thank you for supporting and inspiring thousands and thousands of words. I miss you more than I thought I would, but as they say, ‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. Flying Saucers, for abducting my heart you will forever have my gratitude.

Nelson Mandela Gratitude Note

A Random Note of Gratitude for Nelson Mandela...

Dear Nelson Mandela,

“When a truly great and unique spirit speaks, the lesser ones must be silent.” These words written by Franz Kappus, the young poet to whom Rainer Maria Rilke’s infamous letters were written, are as applicable to you and the legacy you leave behind, as they were to the gentle artist's soul they describe.

This is a simple Random Note of Gratitude, commemorating, thanking, and remembering you for the bravery and tenacity with which you lived your life each and every day. In the face of insurmountable challenge and adversity you dug in deep and forged on, helping to end apartheid in your beloved South Africa, a country that would eventually refer to you as its father.

Your message transcends borders and race. You are a father to us all. Not only did you say, “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination,” you lived it. For being a bright light and a great spirit, for leaving this world a better place than when you entered it and for inspiring all of us to do the same, I express to you my gratitude. President Mandela, you will always be remembered.

Let Chris Johnston Eat Grapes!

Dear Chris,

I have known a few Chris Johnston’s or variations thereof in my time. These CJ’s have been fairly straight forward and simple, which I suppose is to be expected from guys with such a common name. What tickles me about these men the most though, are those uncommon quirks they have that set them apart and make them unique. As an example, one CJ quite dear to my heart says that his go to comfort food is grapes. GRAPES!!! I should be so lucky. In some strange way, this odd little fact actually helps to sum him up pretty damn well. I don’t know what your grapes are Chris, but I’m certain there’s at least one little thing - if not hundreds - you do, say, and feel that makes you your own unique expression on Planet Earth. For that I want to say thank you Chris Johnston! May this Random Note of Gratitude from a stranger help you to remember, enjoy, and love your way of being!

Cantankerous Old Man Gratitude

Dear Emil,

This Random Note of Gratitude is being sent to you because you share a name with my late great grandpa. Some of my earliest memories are about visits with him. According to my parents he was as cantankerous as they come and they couldn’t comprehend my deep affection and curiosity for the man. I sometimes wish I could still view the world, people, and myself with my innocent four year old eyes. It wasn’t all so black and white, and people, things, and events weren’t there to be judged as good or bad, but simply to be experienced. I’m glad I had the wisdom to love and appreciate my cantankerous great grandpa and I’d like to tap into that precious, sweet place in my heart to tell you, a different Emil, in a different place and time, thanks for being you! For the parts you deem beautiful and those you deem ugly, you have my gratitude for all of it and for bravely showing up in this world.

Gratitude For Brets With One "T"

Dear Bret,

My youngest brother is named Bret – also spelled with just one “t”. I just bid him farewell…A young man, figuring out who he is, he is taking a brave leap and venturing out into the world, forging a new path and taking his life in a new direction. Though I will miss him, I am so excited for him and proud of him for listening to the call within, urging him to spread his wings. I think that’s fairly common to most humans, though it looks different for each and every one of us. So, as a means of sending my brother love and gratitude for showing up in his life and for being in mine, I am sending my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to you – another Bret, having another experience, yet bravely leaping and venturing out into the world in your own way, however big or small that may seem. Always wearing a bright, beautiful smile Neal has a joi de vivre that is downright contagious. There is much that I admire about him – his vision, his drive, his generosity, his killer dance moves (especially at a bowling alley!), and his offbeat sense of humor. Actually, everything about him is pretty offbeat. I don’t always get it, but I definitely love it and I couldn’t imagine him any other way! I’m sure you possess some dreams, ideals, and quirks of your own Neal. They make you you, and they are a gift. Thanks for being your own brand of Neal with an “a” in this big, beautiful, crazy world! May you rock out your own killer dance moves in celebration of the life you are living and sharing!

With love and gratitude,
Jana

Uncle John Bozeman Trailblazed a Place Right Into My Heart

Dear Bozeman,

No other city has captured my heart quite like you have. Perhaps it has to do with when I lived within your charming city limits– it was the first time I felt like a place was all mine. Or maybe it’s that you’re a part of my DNA – god bless Uncle John for pulling up roots in Georgia and putting down stakes in Montana! Whatever it is, I can think of few other places as gorgeous and inspiring as you. How I loved chasing down ghosts and dreams through your streets and trails and how my heart swelled to the point of breaking at the Big Sky beauty of it all. Dear, sweet Bozeman, I hope my road leads back to you one day…

Love,
Jana

Making Random Strangers Smile

A very special Random Note of Gratitude! The first note I received back from Lindsey in Virginia!

Jana,

I think what you’re doing is an awesome idea! I was having a bad day when I got your Random Note of Gratitude card. Made me know that I am awesome. I am a stay at home mom so sometimes it gets lonely just talking to baby all day. Keep making random strangers smile. You as well are inspiring and making people happy and brighter! God Bless!

Love,
Lindsey

Safe Haven for The Bozeman Children

Who are the people that made a difference in your childhood?

For me it was our family's good friends Lyle and Judy Elwood.  I have so many memories of being at their home, especially when things were tense at my own home.  There was something that was incredibly cathartic about reflecting on the past and sending this Random Note of Gratitude to them.

Dear Lyle and Judy,

Just a little random note of gratitude… I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the people who made a difference in my formative years, and I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the two of you. More than once you provided safe haven for the Bozeman children when the shit was hitting the fan or Jana’s throw-up was hitting Judy’s shirt as the case may be. The images I have of hanging out at your home in Longmont as a kid will be seared in my memory forever and they conjure up a feeling of safety and acceptance. I realize now how much I, and undoubtedly my family, needed that. I am so grateful to you both for providing it and for your love and support throughout the years.

With lots of love,
Jana

Keri Russell Had Me At Felicity

Dear Keri

You had me at “Felicity!” For all I know you may be a full on bitch, but I kind of doubt that. Maybe it’s our shared Colorado Pisces-ness, but I have the feeling you’re a girl after my own heart – down to earth, authentic, and kind. I always enjoy everything you do and think that you are a talented and beautiful actress and woman! To your continued success!

Warmest regards,
Jana

A Gratitude Trip Down Memory Lane

A Gratitude Trip Down Memory Lane

Dear House on Stanford Lane,

For the better part of my life you were the constant, the place that was always there providing shelter and comfort for my family. I remember thinking that I would die should my parents move or sell you. I didn’t of course, but there will always be a bittersweet aching in my heart for you. You hold inside your walls the joy, the pain, the dreams, the sorrows, the triumph and the tragedy of a sweet and crazy family – my family – striving and struggling to make it in this world. Thank you for holding us in your loving arms all those years.

With deepest gratitude,
Jana
