  • Matthew Sanford Waking Gratitude
Dear Matthew, You have inspired my weekly Random Note of Gratitude! Often when inspired by an individual, I will actually send my note to another person with the same name, but this time I wanted to go direct to the source. That being said, as much as this is a love letter for you, it is also a love letter for Matthew Sanfords everywhere and for all human beings really. By complete, utter “random google chance” I have stumbled upon your work – or rather, my mom did and shared it with me. Your grueling, bittersweet, and profoundly life affirming journey and the quiet simplicity and beauty with which your words express that has touched me deeply and captured my imagination. In a world where perfect bodies doing perfect yoga poses are but an instagram feed away, your book “Waking” has triggered me to remember why I loved yoga the first time I got on my mat and why I continue to practice today. Exhilarating though the striking of poses may be, for me it is the creating of space to embrace and breathe into the silence, dark though I fear it may be, that is the truly sweet and transformative work. It’s at this intersection that I am able to connect my mind with my body, if only for a fleeting moment, and sip the sweet nectar of presence in being. From the bottom of my singing heart, I thank you Matthew for bravely being who you are, for courageously having the experiences you have had, and for transforming them into your magnum opus. The world breathes easier because of you. With love and gratitude,Jana More about Matthew Sanford and his amazing book "Waking" here. janabozeman
  • Plastic Saddle Nat Stuckey Gratitude
Dear Nathan, I just got turned on to a groovy, old country tune by Nat Stuckey called, “Plastic Saddle.” As good of a personal theme song as I’ve ever laid ears on, I’ve been inspired to send my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to you, another man that shares his name. I hope you have a theme song of your own Nathan, a little number that lights you up, quickens your step, and allows you to channel the complete amazingness that is you. For being in this world and doing your thing as only you can, I’m sending you my most heartfelt, “leather saddle” kind of gratitude. Anything less just wouldn’t do! All the best,Jana janabozeman

  • Moore Gratitude for Kelli
I've had the pleasure of teaching yoga to a new client named Kelli Moore the past month or so.  She has inspired this Random Note of Gratitude, which is kind of fun because there are a lot of Kelli Moores in the world. Thanks to each and every one of you for being you! Dear Kelli, For no other reason than you share the same name as a woman I have recently become acquainted with, I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude. The Kelli I know has had a rough go of it the past couple years but she has weathered the storm with fortitude and grace and every time we meet she always has a beautiful smile on her face. So! For the tough times you’ve been through, as well as the happy ones, and for wearing a beautiful smile of your own, I would like to say thank you! There may be a lot of Kelli Moores in the world but there is only one you and you are amazing! Sending you all the best! With gratitude, Jana Send a Random Note of Gratitude and share it on instagram @rngjana #randomnotesofgratitude janabozeman
  • Shine On Sweet Lena
A Random Note of Gratitude inspired by my brother's beautiful partner Lena!  Happy 30th girl!!! Dear Lena, Inspired by my brother’s girlfriend Lena, I have chosen you, another Lena, as the recipient of this Random Note of Gratitude. It’s hard to believe that Lena is turning 30 on Saturday, for I have met very few women as wise, passionate, and brave at such a young age. I don’t know you, but I’m quite certain that you have your own brand of fire and creativity, a way of being in this world and connecting with others that is entirely your own. And it is for being you, plain and simple, that I would like to say thanks. You are a beautiful, amazing woman and your presence on this planet makes a difference. Shine on sweet Lena! With love and gratitude,Jana Lena is an incredible photojournalist.  You can check out her work here. janabozeman

Dear Barbara, Unable to come up with a name today for my weekly Random Note of Gratitude to a person I don’t know, I decided to use fakenamegenerator.com. Though apparently a fake name, it turns out that there a lot of very real Barbara Johnsons in the world! I have settled on you to be the recipient of this physical note, but this is really a thank you/love letter for all of you. Without further ado, for being who are, for showing up in your life, for loving, dreaming, hurting and growing, you have my heartfelt thanks! In ways both big and small you make a difference Barbara – lots of gratitude for being who you are! All the best,Jana janabozeman
  • Love For Emily Bradfords Everywhere
Dear Emily, I am sending you this Random Note of Gratitude because you have the same name as another young woman I know who just lost her father. I have thought about her and all the things that I would like to tell her a lot lately. It seems particularly hard to find the right words in the midst of tragedy, but it has occurred to me that that which I would tell her is not that different from the words I express to individuals I don’t know in these weekly notes. So this is a love note for both of you and for all of the Emily Bradfords in the world. Amidst and even because of all of the tragedies that befall you and the hard lessons that come your way in this life, you are a beautiful woman. It’s easy to enjoy that on the sunny days, but try not to forget it during the stormier times too. You possess inner strength that can get you through anything and your existence on this planet is meaningful. Thank you for being you Emily…no one else could do it better! With lots of love for a happy new year,Jana janabozeman
  • End of Life Counselor Gratitude
It seems my last couple Random Notes of Gratitude have been a little less random and a lot more directed.  No matter, it still feels really good to send gratitude out.  This note is making its way to a woman named Marianne who I have had the pleasure of meeting this past month.  As much as it is a specific thank you for her, it is a general and random thank you for all of the incredible men and women who do the jobs that are so important in our society, but so often overlooked. To social workers, medical professionals, teachers, etc., everywhere, you make a difference and you have my heartfelt gratitude. Dear Marianne, I usually reserve my weekly Random Notes of Gratitude for individuals that I don’t know but I would be remiss if I didn’t send some gratitude your way. Though I don’t know you well, I have been most impressed with your kindness and compassion and especially the grace with which you have helped my grandma (and my family) begin to navigate some important and overwhelming decisions regarding how she wants the rest of her life to look. I often think we give our praise and adoration to all the wrong people – movie stars, athletes, and politicians. They aren’t entirely without their virtues, but there are so many individuals doing such important work that never receive the recognition they deserve. You are one of those individuals Marianne! So, for showing up and being you each and every day and for truly making an important difference in the lives of individuals whose lives are so uncertain, I send you my heartfelt thanks. Wishing you all the best in 2015! Warmest regards,Jana   janabozeman
  • Old Friend Gratitude
Confession... It has been a month since I have sent a Random Note of Gratitude. To be completely honest, it's not the first time it has happened in my almost three years of working on this project. After missing a week or two in the past however, I always felt compelled to make my notes up and back date them. But this time around, I just want to come clean with it.! I'm pleased to report that the world didn't end because four Random Notes of Gratitude didn't go out in the world. Instead, planet Earth kept spinning around the sun and I honored the fact that I needed a break. It has been a challenging month and it's a hectic time of year - the perfect time to conjure up some gratitude if ever there was one - but I didn't feel like it.   Instead, I have been thinking a lot about what I want Random Notes of Gratitude to look like moving forward. I'm not sure what that is yet, I just needed the space to ruminate. Ultimately, I guess it doesn't have to look like anything, In addition to tickling my quirky fancy, the simple act of sending out notes to strangers engages my creativity, my heart, and my humanity.  I would like to think that my notes make a difference and brighten someone else's day and that sharing them inspires others to spread Random Gratitude in their lives, but honestly, writing them brightens my day and inspires me to live my best life, and that to me, is the most important reason to send them. Admittedly, an unusual intro for me...there may be more to come in the future! For now I would like to share the Random Note of Gratitude that I wrote today. It is being sent to a woman in Lakewood, California that is a stranger to me, but who knew my grandparents once upon a time. I have been spending a lot of time with my grandma the past several months and she has mentioned Dorie and Chuck with great fondness on numerous occasions. When Dorie's Christmas Card came in the mail, just as it has every year for probably three decades, I knew it was time to put pen to paper once again.  Thanks to all of you who have supported me in this little adventure.  May you have a wonderful holiday season however it is you celebrate. We really do have a lot to be grateful for - collectively and individually - and I hope we will all be brave enough  to share our light  with others. Random Note of Gratitude #139 to Dorie in California   Dear Dorie, I have been sending out these Random Notes of Gratitude for close to three years now. Typically, I send them to someone I don’t know, thanking them for being who they are. Perhaps I am naïve or idealistic, but despite all the ugliness in the world, I truly believe that we are all more alike than we are different, that our time here is important, and that we all have the ability to create a beautiful, rich story. I don’t know you personally Dorie, but my grandma Carita Eggers does. I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with her the past several months and she has often spoken fondly of you, Chuck, and your family. If nothing else, the fact that you have sent a yearly Christmas card for the past several decades is worthy of some Random Gratitude. But the motivation behind the act itself is what touches me deeply and speaks volumes about the kind of person you are. Thank you for being a wonderful friend and support to my grandma and late grandpa and for staying in touch all these years. And thanks also for being an incredible wife, mom, daughter, and friend to all those that you know…thank you for making your own beautiful story Dorie. I might not know you, but you have done your part to make this world a better place and for that you have my gratitude. I was so sorry to hear that your husband passed this year, but have no doubt you have an amazing family and support system. You will be in my thoughts this holiday season and I truly wish you all the best and lots of love. With gratitude,Jana janabozeman
